How to Stay Mentally Fit

October 10, 2017 40 Comments

First of all, I would like to apologize to my dear audience for being MIA for so long. I have been traveling during the past 3 months, in Israel, Mauritius, Australia, Japan, China, Italy, Georgia, Spain, Thailand, and Bali, and I have finally returned to my sweet sweet home. For those who follow my Instagram Stories, you probably have noticed that I had just spent my entire week at a yoga retreat in Bali last week, to focus on the zen, mindfulness and stay present ( I will write a separate post for my yoga retreat experiences in Bali), which inspired me to write this post in order to share my thoughts with you on how to stay mentally fit during you everyday busy city life, where you might be experiencing various pressures, noises, and temptations from work, family and friends.

Here’s a few quick and short tips for those who want to stay mentally fit and healthy

1 – Exercise Regularly

When you are feeling stressed, exercising is a the best way to de-stress. When you are feeling demotivated for your day, try to hit the gym before you start your day, and I guarantee you that you will feel pumped and more motivated after that.

2 – Try to Meditate in Morning

Our mood for the entire day and our daily productivity is often based on how we feel in the morning after we get out from the bed. Therefore, it is crucial to prepare yourself for the day in the morning by feed the body and mind the right frequency. Some of you might not believe in meditation, actually I didn’t believe in it until I tried it myself earlier this. It is quite a powerful tool to help you calm down, keep the noises and random thoughts away from your mind, and stay focused. A quick 10-15 minutes session in the morning, could help you to keep the negative thoughts and energy away, and prepare yourself to stay focused for a big day. (You should treat every day as your big day!)

3 – Start Your Conversation with a Smile

Not sure if you have noticed, but when you are low in energy level or feeling negative about something, you actually resonates those negative frequencies onto those around you. Likewise, for the positive energies. You might find it daunting to smile someone to start a conversation when someone doesn’t smile back. This might happen for the first or the second time, by the third time, I’m sure that person will reply you with a warm smile from the bottom of his/her heart. Try to brighten up the day for those around you by start a conversation with a warm smile, eventually you will notice that you can achieve so much more during you everyday life than otherwise.

4 – Review Your Day before Bed

We should review our day before bed, by given thoughts to what we have done well or wrong. However, we shouldn’t look back beyond that particular day. Many people have depressions because they linger too much around their past regretting on the things they have or haven’t done. The past is the past, and future is for the later. It is important to focus on the present moments, so we won’t be regretting so much for the things we presently didn’t do sometime in the future. Furthermore, it is crucial for us to know what we have done well or wrong each day, so we can keep improving ourselves to achieve the long-term goal.

5 – Stay Focused with Your Long-term Goals

Without long-term goals to keep you on focused, you are only live your life by days. Do you ever feel like you have no purpose to wake up in the morning everyday? Do you ever feel like your life is purposeless? If you do, then maybe it’s about time for you to think about what your passion is and to build a long-term goal around your passion (I have written a post Building Your Person Brand’ dedicated to how to build your personal brand around your passion and how to monetize from it.)

6 – Learn to Love Yourself

If we don’t even love ourselves, who is going to love us? The person you should love the most is not your partner, your parents or your kids, but yourself. When we love ourselves, we will be more aware of our strength and shortcomings and feel good about ourselves; we will be more prepared to love those around us; we will be more likely to help those who needs help; and how

So what are your secrets of staying mentally fit? Would love to hear your thoughts and it would be great if you can share your secrets below with everyone 🙂

Exercising regularly is so important to stay physically and mentally fit. I injured my ankle two months ago and also last month got really sick so I couldn’t go to the gym for seemingly forever. Today was actually my first day back and I already feel so much better. It starts my day off right and then I’m much more productive and mentally happy the rest of the day! Great tips, Jessie! xo, sharon

3 months of traveling sounds intense!! Anyways, welcome back! This is a great checklist to go over once in a while. I’m really glad I exercise regularly – I do believe it motivates me and keeps me in a positive mood most of the time. I should start meditating though. So many people have suggested I do it!

I love this post because I value wellness and nutrition. I exercise 5x a week and people always ask me how I get my motivation but I think you hit all the right points. It’s all about incorporating it into your daily routine until it becomes part of your lifestyle 🙂

What a great post – and some fabulous tips. They seem like such simple things to do but often we need to be reminded of the basics. Planning your day the night before is my favourite – also the last point of loving yourself.

Thanks for sharing lovely, I really enjoyed reading this blog post.

First of all, welcome back! We’ve missed you for sure! 🙂 Having said that, I want to thank you for bringing up such an important issue which is often overlooked and not as “real” as a physical health issue as it’s not visible on the outside. Mental health is often even considered somewhat of a taboo and that’s why it’s important people like you bring it up and make it as “easy” to talk about as any other health issue. I’ve had my own issues for sure, but I’ve got a lot of help and am thankful for having tools to battle life with. I’m stronger than ever, but it didn’t come for free or even cheap. It cost me everything. I have taken up meditation as well and find that to be a very important part of my daily life and I’ve also started to detox from social media from time to time as it’s not healthy to be on here 24/7. The most important part for me, however, is sleep. I need a solid 8 hours to function, both mentally and physically. Thank you so much for raising awareness for this issue!

I feel so identified with everything you say, I actually wrote something about mental health a few days ago 🙂

I never thought about what you say regarding starting conversations with a smile, but it makes a lot of sense! If we approach things with negativity that’s what we are going to attract (I’m a big believer of the law of attraction).

I’d love if you could share your experience at the retreat in Bali as that is something I’ve been wanting to do, but didn’t know of anyone who has actually done it.

I really enjoyed this post 🙂

Omg, I truly need to exercise. Traveling made me lazy, all I did was eating and right now my body is so much in pain. I can’t wait to wait when you will share about your trip to Georgia.

Having busy lives and lots of traveling can disturb our mental health and this is not good for our body or mind. I love all the tips you put here and definitely much need it to practice each of them. Yes babe. That was a lot of flying! I remember one day, I had to get up at 2am for a 5am flight to Istanbul from Tbilisi, then follower by another flight to Barcelona then followed by a third flight to Ibiza. That was the most number of flights I have taken within the 12 hours window!! It was definitely tiring XD. I was definitely not so mentally fit after that, and took me a few days to wind down. So I guess we just need to practice our mental fitness from time to time so we can stay positive during all time =)

Welcome back friend! I love all your posts and am so happy you got to go on a retreat in Bali! It sounds relaxing and rejuvenating. Also totally love this list especially the reflecting on before going to bed, waking up with a smile and meditation. All things I keep telling myself I will do, especially the meditating part. Sometimes it’s hard to get out of bed and then I’m running late and that’s how my day begins. Will consider these tips in mind 🙂

Thank you babe. It actually feels good to actually be back. Back to my normal daily routine and back to my own comfy bed, that’s one thing I missed the best during my travels. I know sometimes it can be really hard to get out of the bed, especially during winter time. I found the 5-seconds rule has been so helpful in the past and maybe you should give that a try too =) Xx

Wow you certainly have been travelling to a lot of incredible places Jessie! I really like the term ‘mentally fit’, as it reinforces the fact that our mental health is something we can work on and train. I honestly think that exercise is so good for the brain. I might try reviewing the day before bed, it sounds like a fantastic way to stay grateful and positive.

NBD! Only 10 different places in 3 months! You are a girl on the go if ever there was one! How incredible to be able to explore so many different places in that time frame! I love post like this as life is such a balance that it’s very easy to find yourself ‘off.’ I agree and practice most of what you’ve mentioned here but for me, beyond what you’ve included, I have to be very focused on being intentional about every moment and the logistics of how I can best go about that to be the most productive. If I’m scattered, then my brain is and that leads to other unsavory emotions being in each moment fully is my biggest hurdle because my mind is constantly running. But I’ve found when I’m tuned in everything runs much smoother and I get much more accomplished! Thanks for this encouraging and mindful post!

Actually I use to be same. I tend to seek the best way for logistics so I can achieve the maximum productivity. Then I realized that I started to over think or planning for my future events during my current events so I start to loose focus. So afterall, I discovered the best way to do it is to focus on what I do during each event, and set some time aside dedicated for planning only. I totally feel you. Sometimes my mind is scattered, and when I think of thing, I tend to drill down on the thinking path because I scared that I will lose the thought or the idea if I park it aside. One think I found it quite helpful is that I have a note book/dairy with me everyday. When some ideas pop up in my head, I ‘park’ it aside and note it down on my notebook, so I will revisit it later when I’m done with my current task. This really helps. I totally agree with you, when I’m tuned in. Everything is more productive and easier to accomplish!

Wow, you have been such a jet setter these past few months. That is so amazing yet at the same time I can only imagine how tired you are. Staying mentally fit is so important especially when you have so much going on (like you). I think it is important to take time for yourself and a workout helps me as well. I have been hearing so much about the benefits of mediating and need to try it one of these days. I agree that doing it in the morning sets your intention for the day and probably the best way to start the day. I love Lululemon as they are my go-to brand for workout attire. These leggings are amazing and I need to get them right now! xoxo, Christine

You are truly right Christine. Traveling non-stop is tiring, especially when you travel across different time zones all the time! It really drains you out. Earlier this year, I felt mentally unfit for a well, with all the work stress and lacking of time to sleep. However, things are much better now and a part of that credit to those daily routines in the morning and night 🙂 Oh thank, those are the new leggings from Lululomon. You should check them out.
